Week 6: 10/5/09 – A decidedly girly little quilt inspired by one of my current projects. I recently had the good fortune of acquiring a very large bag full of high quality designer cottons for free from an art quilter cleaning out her stash. There wasn’t an unattractive print in the lot, though there were several pieces, such as the floral print that wouldn’t have been a first choice of mine. I tend to gravitate to more geometric prints, although a perusal of Kaffe Fasset’s books does sometimes make me thing about using more florals and it is always good to move outside your comfort zone.
This journal quilt is cut from a sample piece I did to make some quilting design decisions about a baby quilt I’m making. In fact, I attempted a scalloped free-motion design in two tones of pink that I didn’t like. I covered it up with the metallic sheer in the middle. I thought it might be fun to try out some programmed stitches in my Janome that I really don’t use as much as I should. They didn’t come out as clear as I’d like, but I do like the punch of color in pale and deep pink. I simply didn’t have time to do a proper binding but felt for this piece a raw edge wasn’t right for the old-fashioned look. So I went to my ribbon drawer and found this pale green, lacey, cotton edging.
Funny, because it wasn’t planned at all, but I like the way the one large pink flower is peeking out from the middle stripe.
