J is for “journal”…

journal-w1-8-31-09 …and “jumpstart”.

I’ve been thinking about how to get myself going on my blog and get more experimental with my clothwork. I’ve read repeatedly about how journal quilting is a great way to get your creative juices flowing. While my ideas flow readily, I have felt blocked in terms of how to execute them in fabric even though I have a personal library of books ready to guide the way. Having returned to Austin from our summer in Maine and having settled into some kind of routine, it seems the perfect time to start this project. And perhaps after seeing the movie Julie and Julia and discovering one artist making a painting everyday, I feel inspired to set an ambitious goal and make it public so I’ll stick to it. So the goal is to make one 5” x 7” little quilt every week for the next year and document it here.

This little J quilt was meant to get me going on an idea I’ve had for a year. At my daughter’s school they employ a block schedule, splitting classes into two days – an A day and a B day. To help her stay organized with her materials, I made little A and B tags last year out of scrap velvet and taffeta from my crazy quilting days. As soon as I finished them I thought it might be fun to make a funky alphabet quilt out of more scraps and have fun with some free motion quilting. And so, today, my alphabet begins with J.
