Many years ago I found a pattern in the Keepsake Quilting book for what they called a “Victorian Whimsy Ball”. I was fascinated by its construction and instantly thought it would be wonderful for little hands to grab. One of the first ones I made is pictured at right for a co-workers new baby. Because it was soft and lightweight, he could lift it easily and laughed whenever it fell. Her rave reviews, including the fact that it is machine washable and dryable, spurred me to make it a standard gift for new arrivals of family and friends.
What I really like is being able to use soft flannels and cottons, and vary the colors to match a nursery or theme. Making quilts became a natural progression as did the soft, stackable blocks. At craft shows it is hard for people to resist picking up a ball to spin it around, and many like the fact that fabrics coordinate between other items and can be purchased as sets.
As I pursue quilts with an eye to my inner artist and play with surface design, I plan on incorporating a non-traditional look and unique design into my product line for the nursery set.
