Week 4: 9/21/09 – When I began looking around for an idea for this weeks journal quilt, I found a deep blue square on which I had tested some free motion quilting patterns for a storytelling quilt, my current project. I added the blue tone print as well as more batting and a backing to make it large enough. To liven up the look I began to randomly free-motion quilt with red and orange thread.
At one point, I looked at it and realized that even though I was allowing myself to throw something together, it really looked like crap. So I went to a small scrap pile of some “fancy” fabrics and initially grabbed a complimentary orange print, and then some reds and roses thinking I’d cover up what I didn’t like with patches of color. I gave myself some freedom to free-motion quilt them down with whatever pattern came to mind. I kept adding patches to a point where I liked it and realized I was taking this little journal quilt a bit more seriously. I decided it needed a proper border and pulled some red that seemed to make it really pop. On the shelf below the red material, I noticed my grandmother’s bias tape maker that I’ve been thinking of trying out. And so I did, and attached my first homemade bias tape around the edge. In the end, I actually like this little quilt.
